Gardeners in Windsor

Gardeners Just Across The Thames From Windsor

Datchet stands on the north bank of the Thames and Windsor on the south, so our gardeners only have to cross the river to reach you. LJ’s Fencing & Garden Services cut lawns, trim hedges and care for gardens in Windsor, Clewer, Dedworth, Eton and Old Windsor. Gardens differ a good deal from one side of the town to the other, so here is a walk across it, with what each kind of garden needs.

Small Gardens In Central Windsor

Most streets in the middle of Windsor date from the mid to late 1800s, with fine Georgian houses among them. Space behind these homes is tight: a walled yard, a courtyard or a short strip of garden, sometimes with no lawn at all. The gardening here is detailed. We clip the hedge or the climber on the wall, weed the beds and between the paving, hold shrubs to the size the space allows and plant up borders so there is something to look at. A small garden shows every weed, so a short visit at regular intervals does more good than a long one twice a year.

Family Gardens In Clewer And Dedworth

West of the centre, Clewer and Dedworth have the sort of garden most people picture: a lawn, a hedge or fence down each side and a border or two. Here it is the mowing that sets the pace. We cut and edge the lawn through the growing months, keep boundary hedges at a height you and the neighbours are happy with, and weed the beds each time we come. From roughly March to the end of August we go gently with hedges, since birds may be nesting and a nest in use must not be disturbed.

Old Windsor, Eton Wick And The Riverside

Old Windsor, to the south of the town, and Eton Wick on the opposite bank both have gardens on low ground beside the Thames. After a wet winter the soil there can be slow to dry, and a lawn that is walked on or mown too soon is easily marked. We hold off the first cut until the turf will take the weight of a mower, then bring the height down in stages over several visits. Once the warmth comes, these lawns soon make up for lost time.

Larger Plots Towards The Great Park

On the south side of the town, towards Windsor Great Park and the Long Walk, plots tend to be bigger and the trees older. Shade and roots make it harder to keep grass thick, and a great many leaves come down in October and November. We clear them from lawns and beds before they smother what is underneath, cut back shrubs that have spread beneath the trees and give long hedges their yearly trim after the nesting months.

Jobs Our Windsor Gardeners Take Care Of

In any part of Windsor, our gardeners can help with:

  • Mowing and edging lawns
  • Clipping hedges, long or short
  • Keeping borders free of weeds
  • A spring or autumn tidy up
  • Planting up beds and borders
  • A one off visit or a regular slot

More Than The Garden

If the boundary lets the garden down, our fencing in Windsor page covers new fences and repairs. One team handles both, so a fence and the planting in front of it can be thought about together.

Across The River And Along It

From Datchet we reach Windsor, Eton and Old Windsor by crossing the Thames, and both Datchet and Windsor belong to the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead. Further up the river you will find our gardeners in Maidenhead, and to the north, on our own side of the water, our gardeners in Slough.

Windsor Gardening Questions

A: Often more so than a large one. In a courtyard or a small walled garden everything is on view from the house, so a hedge in need of a clip or weeds in the paving are noticed straight away. Visits can be short and spaced to suit, and the garden always looks cared for.

A: Yes. Eton faces Windsor across the Thames, joined to it by Windsor Bridge, which has been closed to motor traffic since 1970. Old Windsor and Eton Wick are close by, and all three are near our base in Datchet.
