LJ’s Fencing & Garden Services are based in Datchet, the parish that borders Slough on the far side of the M4. Our own post town is Slough, so to us it is simply the town next door. Our gardeners offer regular garden maintenance, grass cutting, hedge trimming and the clearing of overgrown gardens in Slough, Langley, Cippenham, Upton, Chalvey and Wexham. Different kinds of home call for different kinds of help, so this page is arranged by the type of property.
Slough grew at great speed after its trading estate opened in 1920, and through the 1920s and 1930s streets of semis and terraces spread outwards as the town took in Salt Hill, Cippenham and much of Langley. Many of these homes have a small front garden and a long, narrow strip behind, often with a hedge running the full length of one side. A garden that shape is quick to mow but slow to keep on top of, because the hedge, the beds and the far end all need looking at. A regular visit takes in the lot: grass cut, edges done, hedge held to a line and the beds weeded.
After the Second World War, large estates were built at Britwell and Langley to rehouse families from London, and the first Britwell tenants moved in during 1956. Gardens on estates of that period are often wider than the older ones, with a lawn at the front as well as the back and a hedge along the boundary. They suit a simple routine through the growing months, followed by a heavier cut of the hedges once nesting birds have finished for the year.
We work for landlords as well as homeowners. The garden of a rented house can go a full season without being touched, and by the time a tenancy ends the lawn may be knee high and the hedge over the path. We cut it all back so the property is ready to let again, and can then return at regular intervals so it stays presentable for whoever moves in. If you look after several properties, tell us about each garden when you get in touch.
Garden maintenance is the routine work, done regularly, that stops a garden slipping: mowing, edging, weeding and trimming. You decide how often we come. Some people want a visit every week or two while the grass is growing, others once a month, and some book a single visit to get the garden straight before taking it on themselves. We also provide grounds maintenance for shared and commercial areas that need the same steady attention.
A visit from our gardeners in Slough can include:
Before the factories came, Slough was known for its nurseries, alongside farming and brickmaking. The Mrs Sinkins pink, a scented white garden pink still grown today, was raised in the town in the late 1800s, and the Cox’s Orange Pippin apple was first raised at nearby Colnbrook around 1825. Herschel Park, the town’s restored Victorian park, is still one of its green spaces. Slough has been a gardening town for a long time, and a plot that has been let go can be brought back with a proper clearance and steady care afterwards.
We cover Slough town and the places that were once villages of their own: Chalvey, Cippenham, Langley, Upton, Wexham and Colnbrook, along with Britwell, Manor Park, Salt Hill and Upton Lea. If a boundary needs work too, see our fencing contractors in Slough. South of the Thames we have gardeners in Windsor, and the full list of towns is on our areas we cover page.
A: Yes. We work for landlords and property managers as well as homeowners, from a clearance between tenancies to regular visits while the home is let. Let us know who will give us access to the garden and how often you would like us to attend.
A: All of it. We are in Datchet, just over the M4, so Langley, Upton and Chalvey are the closest to us, and Cippenham, Britwell, Manor Park and Wexham are a drive across town.
