Fence Repair And Replacement In Slough

A fence rarely gives way all at once. It begins with a lean, a rattle in the wind or a gap along the bottom, and it is usually one of those signs that sends people looking for fencing contractors. LJ’s Fencing & Garden Services are in Datchet, the next parish to Slough just south of the M4, and we repair and replace garden fences in Slough, Langley, Cippenham, Chalvey, Upton and Wexham. Start with what you can see, and we will work back to the cause.

A Fence That Leans

A lean nearly always comes from the posts, not the panels. Either a timber post has rotted where it meets the soil, or its footing has worked loose. Push the top of the post: if it moves at ground level while the panel stays square, the post is at fault. We take out the posts that have gone, set new ones, bring the line back upright and refit the panels if they are still good.

Posts Gone Soft At The Base

Timber rots quickest in the few inches at ground level, where it is wet and dry by turns. A post can look perfect at head height and be spongy at the bottom. One soft post is a repair. Several in a row tell you the run went in at the same time and is wearing out together, and that is the moment to think about renewing the whole length.

Panels That Rattle, Blow Out Or Leave Gaps

Panels that rattle have shrunk or worked loose in their slots, and a panel that has blown out once will do it again in the next gale unless it is properly secured. Gaps along the bottom open up when the lowest boards rot from sitting on damp soil. New panels deal with all three, and a gravel board beneath them holds the timber clear of the earth.

Why Fences In Slough Wear Out Together

Slough was built quickly. Once the trading estate opened in 1920 the town filled with terraces and semis, and big estates followed at Britwell and Langley after 1945. Gardens sit back to back and side by side, so a single run of fencing can border two or three neighbours, and when it goes it is everybody’s concern. Many of these gardens are long and narrow, and the only way in is through the house or along a shared side path. Mention the access when you get in touch, because it shapes how the job is planned.

From One Repair To A Whole New Fence

As fencing contractors in Slough, we take on:

  • Repairs to a damaged stretch of fence
  • Swapping failed posts for new
  • Fitting replacement panels
  • A full new fence for the garden
  • Fencing along a shared boundary
  • Pulling out an old or unsafe fence

Timber Posts Or Concrete Posts

This choice has the biggest effect on how a fence ages. Timber posts look softer and suit a planted garden, but they stand in the soil and will rot there in the end. Concrete posts do not rot, and the slotted kind let a damaged panel be lifted out and a new one dropped in. Paired with gravel boards along the bottom, they hold timber panels off the ground altogether. Neither is right for every garden, and this is general guidance only, so we will talk both through with you on site.

Height, Planning And Nearby Towns

Planning rules for fences are national. Broadly, you may put up a fence of up to 2 metres without applying for permission, falling to 1 metre if it runs alongside a road, and Slough Borough Council is the authority to ask about your own street. More on what we fit is on our fencing services page. We also offer fencing in Windsor, and our gardeners in Slough can take care of the garden inside the fence.

Slough Fencing Questions

A: For long life with little upkeep, concrete posts with gravel boards are hard to beat. If the look of the fence matters most, timber posts blend in better. A mix is possible too, with concrete on the boundary that takes the weather and timber where the fence is on show.

A: That is common in terraced streets and it does not rule the work out. Panels and posts can be carried through with care. Tell us beforehand so we can plan how the materials come in and how the old fence goes out.
